Talk by Dr Adriana Marais: Article and Photos

Talk by Mars One Project astronaut candidate – UKZN alumnus: Dr Adriana Marais - a huge success.

The first talk for 2017 coordinated for the UKZN Durban Alumni Association was a great success with Guest Speaker: Dr Adriana Marais addressing a packed to capacity venue on the Howard College campus on 13 February 2017. Dr Marais – a fellow UKZN graduate – is currently one of the one hundred Mars One Project astronaut candidates in the running to move to the red planet in around 2026. She hopes one day to continue her research on Mars and possibly even contribute to the discovery of evidence that life once existed there.

Adriana did a most informative and entertaining presentation on how we are living in a new era of innovation in space exploration and explained the detailed planning required for the journey to Mars. She outlined the funding and research required, the travel arrangements for the journey as well as what life on the planet would possibly be like for the people who successfully make the journey to Mars.

The presentation was followed by a question and answer session and then much discussion over snacks and drinks in an adjoining venue.  The attendees – mostly UKZN graduates – enjoyed the impromptu photo opportunity with Adriana.

The Durban Alumni Association plans to arrange a number of talks and tours for the year – but realises that the most exciting and informative talk given by Adrian Marais may be a hard act to beat.
