Medical SRC Bursary Fund

Recognizing the pressing need for more funding for students, the Medical Students Representative Council (MSRC) establishes a Bursary Fund to complement financial assistance already available to students at UKZN, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. The MSRC humbly requests that you assist in terms of financial sponsorship.

BACKGROUND

Recognizing the pressing need for more funding for students, the Medical Students Representative Council
(MSRC) establishes a Bursary Fund to complement financial assistance already available to students at UKZN,
Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine.
The MSRC humbly requests that you assist in terms of financial sponsorship.
Outlined below is a brief layout of how this Bursary Fund functions.
The Medical SRC Bursary Fund will come to the rescue of financially needy and academically deserving
students to cover the following:
1. Registration costs incl. for accommodation
2. Food stipends
3. Tuition for repeating final year students
4. Other costs as determined by availability of funds e.g outstanding costs from previous years


1. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
1.1 Increase access to education
1.2 Look after the welfare of students
1.3 To serve as a source of funding for final years coming back for a block(To repay within the first year of
working)
1.4 Develop cooperation between student governance and other University structures

2. STAKEHOLDERS
I. STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE/ STUDENT FUNDING
The student services department plays a major role in the outsourcing of prospective sponsors for the
Bursary Fund, as well as it's administration
II. UKZN FOUNDATION
The Foundation’s role is to collaborate with SRC in drawing up strategies for acquisition of funds where
possible and to act as conduit for finances from external benefactors.
III. CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
Certain recognized clubs and societies can play an instrumental role in identifying students in need of financial
assistance.

3. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
3.1 Students registered or accepted to study MBChB are eligible to apply for financial assistance through the
the Bursary Fund.
3.2 All applicants must motivate their application with description of their financial circumstances providing all
the relevant documents e.g affidavits.
3.3 Applicants must be academically deserving.
4. ADMINISTRATION OF FUNDS
4.1 Funds will be deposited into the UKZN Foundation account and then into the Bursary Fund cost centre
account under Student Funding
4.2 Student Funding will process applications
4.3 The MSRC will make recommendations to the local Student Funding Office, which will then be responsible
for selecting beneficiaries as per eligibility criteria and need.

5. TARGETS
Approximately R1 000 000 is needed by to cover tuition and accommodation registration for students and
possibly cover outstanding fees from the previous years. This figure is extrapolated from the sum of what
students owed prior to closure of registration this year.

6. REPAYMENT
6.1 Final year students funded for repeat blocks are required to pay back the amount loaned to them without
interest within the first year of employment.
6.2 Students who receive a bursary within that year and are reimbursed the registration fee will have to pay
back that amount.
