What is the National Consumer Protection Act and What Does it Mean For You?
Wendy Knowler is a journalist with over 25 years’ experience and 17 of which has been as a consumer journalist in both print and radio. She is currently the consumer writer for Times Media. She has a weekly consumer column, In Your Corner, which is published on Mondays in The Times, Herald and Dispatch.
Wendy wrote her first consumer column, Taking Issue, for The Mercury from 1998, and after a brief stint as Fairlady magazine’s consumer editor in the mid-2000s, returned to Independent Newspapers in 2006 as consumer editor, her columns appearing in The Star, Cape Times, Pretoria News and Daily News. Her consumer column there tackled issues ranging from misleading advertising to crooked car deals and the effects of the aggressive marketing of junk food to children.
She has won several journalism awards, including a National Vodacom Journalist of the Year award in the print feature category, for her in-depth report on South Africa’s domestic workers. She won the consumer Journalist category of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Consumer Champion awards in 2005, and was joint winner of the same award in 2008. In the same year, she was one of four finalists in Vodacom’s Women in Media awards.
Wendy will give an informative address on “The Consumer Protection Act: No. 68 of 2008” which aims to promote a fair, accessible and sustainable marketplace for consumer products and services through: - establishing national norms and standards for consumer protection - prohibiting unfair marketing and business practices - promote responsible consumer behaviour and a consistent legislative - enforce framework relating to consumer transactions and agreements, etc.
