January 16, 2017

Bill Guest is currently finalising Volume 3 The University of Natal (1977-2003) and invites graduates and staff members of that era to send him their recollections/reminiscences/anecdotes relating to themselves, fellow students and staff members as well as retrospective comments about the quality of education they received at that time.

A call for recollections/reminiscences/anecdotes from University of Natal graduates of 1977 to 2003.

Professor W.R. (Bill) Guest (Emeritus Professor and Senior Research Associate,  Pietermaritzburg Campus, UKZN) is a Durban graduate of the University (BA, BA Hons, MA, Ph.D) and taught on both campuses (Howard College 1967-1976 and Pietermaritzburg 1977-2000) before retiring as a senior professor and  teaching in the Bridging the Gap programme on the latter campus (2001-2005). He has published a variety of articles and authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited more than a dozen books on South African history, focusing primarily on the Natal-Zululand region. In 2010  he published A Fine Band of Farmers Are We! A History of Agricultural Studies in Pietermaritzburg 1934-2009 (on the Faculty of Agriculture and also available from the Natal Society Foundation) and, more recently, centennial histories of the Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) Museum and the Msunduzi-Voortrekker Museum in Pietermaritzburg. In 2013 he was given an Amafa AKwaZulu-Natali Heritage Award.

Bill Guest is currently writing a three-volume history of the former University of Natal (1909-2003). The first part was published in December 2015 under the title Bill Guest Stella Aurorae The History of a South African University Volume 1 Natal University College (1909-1949) (Occasional Publications of the Natal Society Foundation, Pietermaritzburg, 2015, 391 pages, ISBN 978-0-9921766-2-4). Copies can be purchased from The Administrator, through the Foundation’s website: http://www.natalia.org.za/

In due course all three volumes will be available on that website.

The second part, Volume 2 The University of Natal (1949-1976), is due to be published by the Foundation this year.

These would be gratefully received and included in the book, along with the names of the contributors. He has spent more than a year researching material in the UKZN Archive and other repositories but, as you will appreciate, these records tell only part of the story while student and staff reminiscences add a unique human dimension to them.

Contributions can be sent to him at: bizzngrizz@telkomsa.net

A deadline for submissions of 28 February 2017.
