VICE CHANCELLORS COMMUNIQUE: Share the Festive Cheer Campaign

November 20, 2018

Donate at least R50 or any multiple thereof to help us support students in need of proper nutrition in 2019.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal faces a number of funding challenges to ensure access and success of its students. The UKZN Foundation runs a number of campaigns throughout the year to raise much needed funds for: bursaries, the disability unit, teaching and research support, community outreach projects and infrastructure development.
The Vice-Chancellors annual campaign addresses a lesser known challenge, food insecurity. More than 2000 students do not receive proper daily nutrition which is an essential component for academic success. Being undernourished affects a student’s energy levels resulting in irritability and lack of concentration. Furthermore, undernourished students immunity is compromised resulting in illness and absenteeism and reduced exposure to teaching and learning.

I appeal to you to think of those less fortunate than yourself as you prepare for the festive season by donating at least R50 or any multiple thereof to help us support students in need of proper nutrition in 2019.

I would be grateful if you could challenge at least 20 friends, family and your professional networks to support this worthy cause by forwarding this campaign to them via E-mail, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and WhatsApp.

Wishing you and your loved ones everything of the best during the festive season.

Professor Nana Poku
Vice-Chancellor and Principal (Acting)
