Youth Day Notice by UKZN Convocation
The University of KwaZulu-Natal Convocation joins the rest of the country to commemorate the 2022 Youth Day.
This day holds deep historical significance in the history of our country and the struggle for freedom. However, its importance cannot only be located in the past. Amid all the socio-economic challenges that face young people, as a university convocation, we take pride and pledge our solidarity with the many young people that still see value in pursuing and attaining higher education.
Perhaps not an end in themselves, but the qualifications that our alumni’s have attained remain a visible symbol of hope an improved life, a beginning of journey of self-sufficiency and prosperity.
The 1976 generation fought a brave fight for quality education. To this day, that call remains relevant. The imperfections of the current educational system and our institutions of higher learning should not be a deterrence but an invitation to deepen our skills and knowledge acquisition to champion for a decolonised, quality, and affordable education that will help address South Africa, and the continents’, developmental challenges.
We are excited by the dynamism and agility of the youth of this country to embrace technology and entrepreneurial opportunities to explore new professional and business endeavours. This has become even more pronounced in the post-Covid world.
We believe UKZN is well-positioned to advance this cause and with all our support will continue to ‘Inspire Greatness’.
Once again, we appeal to businesses and individuals, in particular our alumni, to demonstrate practical support by donating to students and graduates that are owing to settle their outstanding fees. We further call upon our alumni to adopt-a-student initiative in any of our campuses to impart their skills, knowledge and empower the next generation of leaders.
